One of the most expensive categories of non-contact sensors are ultrasonic. At STS Electronics, we manufacture several main categories of standard ultrasonic sensors - for level and object sensing, label registration, linear displacement and special application sensors using our familiar technology.
Ultrasonic sensors are suitable for reading all sound-reflecting objects. They measure the time between sending and receiving the reflected sound signal to calculate the distance to the object. The color, transparency, and reflectivity of the object's surface are irrelevant. They are suitable for controlling or measuring levels of granules, liquids or other fluids. They register objects at long distances and objects with difficult irregular surfaces. They are used for counting or counting labels, foils and other materials.
They are based on the principle of propagation time of the ultrasound signal. The sensors calculate the time between sending and receiving a reflected sound signal. One advantage of this type of distance measurement is that the measurement result is not affected by the material properties of the target. Even on shiny, colored or textured surfaces or optically transparent objects, reliable registration, high accuracy and speed are guaranteed.
In working condition, there is voltage in the acoustic transducer. Due to the piezoelectric effect, the transducer is excited and begins to vibrate and generate a sound burst - a series of sound pulses. At this point, the clock pulse generator switches the sensor into receive mode and time measurement begins. When the series of sound pulses hits the target, the echo is reflected back to the sensor. The echo of the series of sound pulses causes the transducer to vibrate due to the piezoelectric effect and the time measurement stops. Based on the measured time and the speed of sound, the distance to the target can be determined.
